Chapter Fifteen

One thing Sweet River loves more than anything is a festival. Every holiday, including Valentine’s Day had one. This was the first time since Christmas for people to get out and about. Though much smaller than our Christmas one, many of our favorite vendors were back. Luckily, this time, someone else was chairing it, so I didn’t have that responsibility weighing me down, which is good since I had been called into the principal’s office.

“Do you guys have it handled?” I asked Maria and Carrie, who manned our booth.

“No worries, boss,” Carrie said. “Don and Mrs. Whedon are in the store, and we’re good for the next few hours.”

Maria and I laughed.

“Carrie, some day you are going to take over the world,” I joked.

“Shhh,” she said. Then she steepled her fingers together and waggled her eyebrows. “Don’t reveal my evil plan.” She laughed evilly, which was pretty funny.

“I’ll be at the police station talking to my brother. Feel free to text me and say you need me to come help right away. I could use an out.”

“I’ll give it twenty minutes, and then I’ll text you,” Carrie said.

“You really are my favorite.”

“Hey.” Maria pretended to be upset.

“It’s okay, Mom, someone has to be the favorite.”

Those words… Something clicked in my brain.

“Thanks again, I’ll see you soon. Come on, George.” We took off toward the station at a fast pace. George was still punishing me for leaving him.

“Slow down, dude.” I can’t run without having some sort of cardiac event. Well, I assumed since exercise wasn’t my friend, that might happen. My doctor said something completely opposite, but I didn’t believe her.

As we walked away, I had that strange feeling that someone was watching me. I turned around and put my hand over my eyes. But nobody looked my way.

“Weird,” I said. While I didn’t always get it right with suspects in a case, my spidey senses were usually on target.

I looked back over the crowds again, but didn’t see anything out of the ordinary.

Maybe it was the case giving me the willies.

No one was at the front desk of the police station and the lobby was empty. I’d never seen it like this. It was kind of spooky.

“Greg?”

George sniffed the air, but he wasn’t growling. At least there was that.

“Greg?” I said louder. My voice trembled and my hands shook.

Still, no answer. I didn’t know if I should wait in the lobby, or head back to his office. George made the decision for me, as he yanked me toward my brother’s office. He wasn’t there, but the door was open. I sat down in one of the chairs across from his desk. George settled in a dog bed my brother kept for him in the corner.

When Greg didn’t show up after a few minutes, I closed the door. The files from Nia’s case were on his desk.

I was about to text him, when my phone dinged.

Greg texted me: Emergency call. Be about 45 mins.

I could walk back to the festival, but that was a whole two blocks away.
